In Punjab, it is known as Lohri and celebrates fertility and happiness. In Gujarat and Rajasthan, it marks the beginning of Uttarayan – a six-month long period favorable for new ventures or business opportunities. In Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated as Pongal – a three-day festival dedicated to Lord Indra for bountiful crops.
